It is mentioned in every Ayurvedic text that Amalaki is one of the best known plants used in Ayurveda. It is commonly known as Indian gooseberry or amla. Part of the plant most used is its fruit.
In Ayurveda, Amalaki is considered one of the best Rasayana, or one of the best elixirs for the body. It is also the main ingredient of the famous Ayurvedic preparation Chyawanprash and one of three ingredients Triphale, another well-known Ayurvedic preparation.
Amalaki contains five out of six tastes, as they are defined by Ayurveda. The taste missing is the salty taste. Due to its numerous health benefits, Amalaki has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years.
Amalaki contains a very high concentration of vitamin C, which makes it an exceptionally rich source of antioxidants and it is therefore used in many food supplements and cosmetic products.
Amalaki is also rich in polyphenols and flavonoids and contains high concentrations of gallic acid.
Amalaki balances all three doshas and has a particularly beneficial effect on Pitta dosha. Although it soothes Pitta, it also stimulates Agni and builds up Ojas.
