It is mentioned in every Ayurvedic text that Amalaki is one of the best known plants used in Ayurveda. It is commonly known as Indian gooseberry or amla. Part of the plant most used is its fruit.
In Ayurveda, Amalaki is considered to be one of the best Rasayanas, i.e. one of the best body elixirs. It is also the main ingredient of the famous Ayurvedic preparation Chyawanprashand one of the three ingredients of Triphala, which is another well known Ayurvedic preparation.
Amalaki contains five out of six tastes, as they are defined by Ayurveda. The taste missing is the salty taste. Due to its numerous health benefits, Amalaki has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years.
Amalaki contains a very high concentration of vitamin C, which makes it an exceptionally rich source of antioxidants and it is therefore used in many food supplements and cosmetic products.
Amalaki is also rich in polyphenols and flavonoids and it contains high concentrations of gallic acid.
Amalaki balances all three doshas and it has an especially beneficial effect on Pitta dosha. Although it soothes Pitta, it also stimulates Agni and builds up Ojas.
